- In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar or honey, and molasses. Add garlic powder, onion powder, a pinch of salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Stir well until the mixture is fully combined.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer while stirring frequently to prevent sticking or burning. If the sauce is too thick, add water a tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
- Let the sauce simmer for about 10–15 minutes to blend the flavors. Stir occasionally. Taste the sauce and adjust the salt, pepper, or sweetness as needed. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before transferring it to a clean jar or airtight container.
Notes
Starnes BBQ Sauce charm lies in its simplicity the sharp tang of vinegar meets bold pepper heat. I sometimes tweak the heat based on mood extra Tabasco for brisk cuts, or a hint of sweetness if it’s landing on pulled pork. Authenticity lovers skip sugar, but a pinch won’t hurt.
