Low Sugar BBQ Sauce

Low Sugar BBQ Sauce is a healthier alternative to traditional barbecue sauces, offering the same smoky, tangy flavour with significantly less sugar. Ideal for those managing blood sugar or reducing calorie intake, it often uses natural sweeteners like Stevie or monk fruit. This sauce complements grilled meats, vegetables, and sandwiches, providing bold taste without compromising dietary goals. Perfect for keto, diabetic, or low crab diets.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tomato sauce no added sugar
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons erythritol or your preferred low calorie sweetener
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Storage container or jar

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine tomato sauce, tomato paste, ½ cup water, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chilli powder, black pepper, erythritol, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until everything is evenly blended.
  3. Once it starts to gently simmer, lower the heat to a simmer and let it cook uncovered for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  4. If the sauce feels too thick, gradually add up to ¼ cup water until you get the consistency you want.
  5. Take the pan off the heat and let the sauce cool. Pour it into a clean jar or container and store it in the fridge. The sauce will thicken more as it cools.

Notes

If you don’t have erythritol, you can use Stevie or monk fruit sweetener but adjust the quantity to taste as these are sweeter. Always taste and tweak as you cook that’s the fun part of homemade sauces!
