Low Salt BBQ Sauce

Low salt BBQ sauce is a healthier alternative to traditional BBQ sauce, designed to reduce sodium intake while still delivering rich, tangy flavor. It typically combines ingredients like tomatoes, vinegar, brown sugar, and various spices, with less or no added salt. This sauce is ideal for individuals monitoring their sodium levels or those following a low-sodium diet. It can be used for grilling, marinating, or as a dipping sauce, providing a flavorful option without compromising on taste.

  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder

  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, add all ingredients: tomato sauce, ketchup, water, molasses, vinegar, lemon juice, and all the spices.
  2. Use a whisk or spoon to thoroughly mix the ingredients until fully blended.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cooks.
