Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Airtight container or glass jar for storage

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • ¾ cup light corn syrup
  • ½ cup tomato paste
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice adjust to taste

Instructions

Mix The Base;

  • Pour water, light corn syrup, tomato paste, vinegar, molasses, and brown sugar into a medium sized pot. Whisk everything together until it’s nice and smooth.

Add The Flavour;

  • Sprinkle in the salt, onion powder, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and a bit of liquid smoke. Squeeze in about a tablespoon of lemon juice to start taste later and add more if you’d like a bit more tang.

Start Cooking;

  • Set the pot over medium heat and bring it to a gentle boil. Once it starts bubbling, lower the heat to keep it at a light simmer.

Let It Simmer;

  • Let the sauce cook slowly for about 30 to 35 minutes. Give it a stir every now and then so nothing sticks. It’ll thicken up a bit as it simmers.

Taste Test;

  • Try a spoonful and see what you think. Want it tangier? Add a little more vinegar or lemon juice. Need it sweeter? Stir in a bit more brown sugar.

Cool And Store;

  • Once it’s done, take it off the heat and let it cool down completely. Pour it into a clean jar or airtight container. Keep it in the fridge it should stay good for up to two weeks.
