Ingredients
  

For The Cake

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups chopped nuts walnuts or pecans

For The Topping & Fudge Sauce

  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups very hot water

Get The Oven And Pan Ready

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray so your cake won’t stick.

Combine The Dry Ingredients

  • In a big mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Make sure everything is well combined.

Add The Wet Ingredients

  • Pour in the milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and vegetable oil. Stir until the batter is smooth. Gently fold in the chopped nuts, if using, and then spread the batter evenly in your prepared baking dish.

Make The Topping Layer

  • In another small bowl, mix the brown sugar and ¼ cup of cocoa powder. Sprinkle this evenly over the cake batter, but don’t stir it in.

Pour The Hot Water

  • Carefully pour very hot water over the topping mixture. Resist the urge to mix it will sink during baking and turn into a gooey fudge sauce under the cake.

Bake And Enjoy

  • Bake for about 35 minutes, until the top looks set and dry. Let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm, making sure to scoop up both the cake and the sauce. Add vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or extra nuts if you like.
