Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup tomato puree or ketchup
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup dark molasses
  • ½ tablespoon unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon liquid hickory smoke or natural hickory smoke flavor
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • Optional: Pinch of cayenne pepper for heat

Equipment

Method
 

Combine Ingredients:
  1. In a medium saucepan, add tomato puree (or ketchup), water, apple cider vinegar, molasses, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, butter, lemon juice, and yellow mustard.
Add Seasonings:
  1. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, hickory smoke (or liquid smoke), and cayenne pepper if using.
Simmer the Sauce:
  1. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the butter melts and the mixture begins to bubble gently.
Reduce and Thicken:
  1. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
Taste and Adjust:
  1. Taste the sauce and adjust salt, sweetness, or heat if needed.
Cool and Store:
  1. Let the sauce cool slightly before transferring it to a jar or bottle. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
