Equipment

  • Large saucepan or stockpot
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or whisk
  • Airtight container or mason jars (for storing)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • cups apple cider vinegar
  • cup yellow mustard
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup dark corn syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika or regular paprika
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Instructions

  • In a large saucepan or stockpot, combine the tomato puree, water, apple cider vinegar, yellow mustard, honey, dark corn syrup, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to blend.

Add Dry Spices:

  • Stir in the chili powder, dry mustard, paprika, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to ensure all the spices are evenly distributed.

Simmer:

  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 40–45 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning at the bottom.

Taste and Adjust:

  • After simmering, taste the sauce and adjust sweetness, heat, or acidity if needed (you can add more honey, vinegar, or spices based on your preference).

Cool and Store:

  • Let the sauce cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean, airtight container or mason jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
