Instructions
Step 1: Cook The Jalapeno
Start by warming a bit of vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Toss in the minced jalapeno and let it cook for a couple of minutes just until it softens and smells nice.
Step 2: Add The Sauces And Liquids
Now pour in the ketchup, tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, water, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Give everything a good stir so it’s well mixed.
Step 3: Add The Sweet Stuff
Stir in the molasses and brown sugar. Keep mixing until the sugar dissolves completely into the sauce.
Step 4: Add The Spices
Sprinkle in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, allspice, black pepper, and kosher salt. Mix it all in so the flavors are evenly spread out.
Step 5: Simmer And Let It Thicken
Bring the sauce to a light boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer without a lid for about 40 to 45 minutes. Give it a stir every so often it’ll slowly thicken up as it cooks.
Step 6: Add Smoke (Optional)
If you want that smoky BBQ flavor, add a splash of liquid smoke during the last few minutes of simmering. Taste the sauce and tweak the seasoning if you need to.
Step 7: Cool It Down And Store
Take the pot off the heat and let the sauce cool. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend it. Once it’s cooled, pour it into a clean jar or bottle. It’ll keep in the fridge for about two weeks, or you can freeze it to store it longer.
