Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or whisk
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Blender or immersion blender (optional, for smoother texture)
  • Storage jars or bottles (for leftover sauce)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 28-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon green peppers
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 jalapeno pepper seeded and finely minced
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke optional, for smoky flavor

Instructions

Step 1: Cook The Jalapeno

  • Start by warming a bit of vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Toss in the minced jalapeno and let it cook for a couple of minutes just until it softens and smells nice.

Step 2: Add The Sauces And Liquids

  • Now pour in the ketchup, tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, water, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Give everything a good stir so it’s well mixed.

Step 3: Add The Sweet Stuff

  • Stir in the molasses and brown sugar. Keep mixing until the sugar dissolves completely into the sauce.

Step 4: Add The Spices

  • Sprinkle in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, allspice, black pepper, and kosher salt. Mix it all in so the flavors are evenly spread out.

Step 5: Simmer And Let It Thicken

  • Bring the sauce to a light boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer without a lid for about 40 to 45 minutes. Give it a stir every so often it’ll slowly thicken up as it cooks.

Step 6: Add Smoke (Optional)

  • If you want that smoky BBQ flavor, add a splash of liquid smoke during the last few minutes of simmering. Taste the sauce and tweak the seasoning if you need to.

Step 7: Cool It Down And Store

  • Take the pot off the heat and let the sauce cool. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend it. Once it’s cooled, pour it into a clean jar or bottle. It’ll keep in the fridge for about two weeks, or you can freeze it to store it longer.
