Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Jar or airtight container (for storage)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons chipotle peppers in adobo sauce finely minced
  • ¼ cup cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses or honey
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Cook The Flavour Base:

  • Heat a bit of olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Toss in the minced chipotle peppers in adobo and cook for about a minute, just until they start to release that deep, smoky aroma.

Add Everything Else:

  • Stir in the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, black pepper, and a bit of honey. Mix it all together until well combined.

Let It Simmer:

  • Bring the sauce to a light simmer. Turn the heat down low and let it cook uncovered for around 10 to 15 minutes, stirring every so often, until it thickens a bit.

Make It Smooth (Optional):

  • If you want a silky smooth texture, blend the sauce using an immersion blender right in the pot. Or let it cool for a few minutes and blend it in a regular blender.

Cool Down & Store:

  • Take the pot off the heat and let the sauce cool. Once it’s at room temperature, pour it into a clean jar or container. Keep it in the fridge it should stay good for about two weeks.

Notes

Always use a clean spoon when dipping to avoid contamination. If the sauce thickens too much after refrigeration, stir in a splash of water or apple cider vinegar to loosen it up.
