- 1 cup unsweetened apple juice or apple cider
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion finely chopped
- 6 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed recommended
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp brown sugar packed
- 1 tbsp honey or pure maple syrup
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp chili powder adjust to taste for heat
- ½ tsp kosher salt or to taste
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Optional: ½ cup finely diced Granny Smith apple for extra texture
- Additional salt and pepper to taste
Deglaze & Simmer
Add the apple juice (or cider), apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice to the pan. Stir in the tomato paste, ketchup, brown sugar, honey (or maple syrup), and optional diced apples. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Add Seasonings
Stir in smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and optional extra salt and pepper. Simmer the mixture uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and the apples (if added) soften.
Taste and Adjust
Taste the sauce and adjust salt, sweetness, or heat as desired. If it’s too thick, thin with a splash of water or apple juice.
